One of the proposed names for it during development was Whaifew.
Like Lasslee, Wifemin was also originally proposed to be Water/Psychic.
Judging by its attractive female-like design and its Pokédex entry, Wifemin is most likely based on waifus. It may also be based on the Japanese concept of the ideal wife, the "yamato nadeshiko". Its Psychic type is probably a nod to Gardevoir, another feminine-looking Pokémon with a devoted nature which often appears in sensual Pokémon fanart. Interestingly, Wifemin has a higher chance of being male than female. This is probably an intentional reference to various feminine-looking Pokémon that have an equal or higher chance of being actually male, such as Gardevoir (50% chance of being male) or Primarina (87.5% chance of being male, like all starters). Said gender ratio may also be a reference to futanari, a porn genre with girls who have male and female genitals. The design also resembles a less uglier version of Jynx. It is also likely to be heavily based on the 'Trap' anime trope, where feminine looking characters are revealed to actually be male, which could also be why Wifemin is blue, representing the sensation of 'Blue Balls'.
